iPhone 18 Pro Max Device Thickness Allegedly Revealed

Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max will be the same thickness as its predecessor, measuring in at 8.75mm. The latest information comes from Weibo-based leaker Ice Universe.

The leaker suggested that the lack of evolution in Apple's Pro lineup this year is because most of the company's development focus has been on the "iPhone Ultra," its rumored foldable model.

The latest claim comes as somewhat of a surprise, given that the same leaker in March said the device would be slightly thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. That chimed with a report last year alleging hardware changes in the iPhone 18 Pro Max will make it the heaviest iPhone yet.

Last November, fellow Weibo-based leaker Instant Digital said the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be slightly heavier than its predecessor, tipping its weight over 240 grams and making it the heaviest iPhone since the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Of course, if the new model does turn out to have the same thickness, this doesn't necessarily mean its weight won't change either. The device's heaviness could still be impacted by internal hardware changes.

Digital Chat Station – another Weibo-based leaker – has claimed the iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature a bigger battery, with a capacity in the range of 5,100 to 5,200 mAh (up from 5,088 mAh in the eSim version of the iPhone 17 Pro Max).

If so, Apple may have reconfigured the internal design or miniaturized aspects of it in order to accommodate the larger battery without altering the device's thickness. Apple isn't expected to change the screen size of the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and it will feature the same 6.9-inch display as the current model.

The β€Œβ€ŒiPhone 18β€Œβ€Œ Pro and iPhone 18β€Œβ€Œ Pro Max may feature a possibly smaller Dynamic Island, along with a next-generation C2 modem, a simplified Camera Control, and an upgraded main camera with a variable aperture. The devices are expected to be unveiled around mid-September alongside the foldable iPhone.

iPhone 18 Pro: Leaker Reveals Alleged Size of Smaller Dynamic Island

For now, rumors have settled on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max featuring a smaller Dynamic Island, and now a leaker has revealed its alleged size.

iPhone 18 Pro with a smaller Dynamic Island (mockup via Ice Universe)

The account "Ice Universe" today claimed the Dynamic Island cutout on the iPhone 18 Pro models will be approximately 35% narrower than it is on the iPhone 17 Pro models. Specifically, they said it will have a width of around 13.5mm, down from around 20.7mm, and they shared the mockup image above to show what it would look like.

These measurements refer to the default size of the Dynamic Island while the iPhone screen is turned on, and this includes the extra black pixels that surround the actual cutouts for Face ID sensors and the front camera. While showing Live Activities and other information, the Dynamic Island temporarily becomes wider.

An earlier report from The Information indicated that the iPhone 18 Pro models will feature under-screen Face ID. As a result, the publication said the devices would have only a hole-punch front camera in the top-left corner of the screen, rather than the current pill-shaped cutout for the front camera and Face ID sensors. However, the latest word is that only Face ID's flood illuminator will be moved under the screen this year, meaning that Apple will only be able to shrink the pill-shaped cutout rather than remove it entirely.

According to display industry expert Ross Young, who has a very good track record, the smaller Dynamic Island will last through at least 2027. So, it could take at least a few more years until the iPhone finally gets a truly seamless display.

"Ice Universe" has leaked some accurate iPhone dimensions in the past, giving them credibility, but they do not have a perfect track record.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro models in September.

Two More iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 Pro Max Rumors Drop Before Apple Event

It is now the eve of Apple's annual iPhone event, and last-minute rumors about the iPhone 17 devices continue to surface out of China.

The latest rumors pertain to the iPhone 17 Air and the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

First, the account Fixed Focus Digital on Chinese social media platform Weibo today said the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air is unlikely to launch in China, due to its lack of a SIM card slot. However, regulatory database listings suggested there would in fact be a variant of the iPhone 17 Air with a SIM card slot, so the situation is unclear. In any case, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to rely entirely on eSIM technology in most countries.

Second, the account Ice Universe on Weibo today reiterated that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be 8.725mm thick, whereas the iPhone 16 Pro Max is 8.25mm thick. If this information is accurate, the iPhone 17 Pro Max would be approximately 5% thicker than the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The account previously suggested the device would be thicker in order to accommodate a larger battery with a leaked 5,088 mAh capacity.

Both of the Weibo accounts have pretty good track records. We will find out if these rumors prove to be true in around 24 hours from now.
